Education inequality in England is entrenched.
By the time they start school, a child born into a socio-economically disadvantaged family is already less likely to meet expected levels of language, communication, and physical development. These gaps only widen throughout primary and secondary school. By the age of 16, socio-economically disadvantaged young people are significantly more likely to leave formal education without good grades in English and maths. These attainment gaps are a major driver of differences in education and employment outcomes later in life.
This doesn’t need to be the case.
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is an independent charity dedicated to breaking the link between family income and education achievement. We support schools, nurseries and colleges to improve teaching and learning for two to 19-year-olds through better use of evidence.
Initially set up in 2011 with a founding grant of £125m from the Department for Education, the EEF’s tremendous impact during its first decade of operation resulted in its re-endowment in 2022, allowing continuation of work until at least 2032. During the pandemic over 90 percent of schools used EEF resources, and over 70 percent of Head Teachers access the EEF’s research and materials to inform how their schools engage with parents and educate children.
Following his successful longstanding tenure, the EEF’s founding Chair, Sir Peter Lampl, is now stepping down. The EEF is now seeking an experienced Chair to lead the EEF’s outstanding Board of Trustees and support the delivery of the EEF’s mission. Passionate about the role of education in providing opportunity, you will be capable of navigating and influencing both complex systems and wide-ranging stakeholders, including at the highest levels. You will appreciate the EEF’s commitment to research and analytic rigour alongside the need to ensure the EEF’s recommendations are both actionable and relevant to its many stakeholders – from policy-makers to teachers and parents. You will be a credible and experienced leader, able to consolidate the impact the EEF has had to date and to enable its continued development during the next phase of its existence.
