The Royal Alexandra and Albert School was founded in 1758 and reincorporated as an educational charity in 1949 under the Royal Alexandra and Albert School Act. The 1949 Act defined the objects of the new School. The main objects are:
- To establish and maintain a boarding school for boys and girls who are without one or both parents or whose special circumstances make it desirable that they should go to a boarding school;
- To bring up the boys and girls in the School upon Protestant principles and to have them educated under arrangements provided by the statutory education authority.
Since its original incorporation the organisation has evolved and the Foundation now funds the boarding facilities and pastoral care with the education being provided by the Voluntary Aided School, Royal Alexandra and Albert School, a state funded maintained school with around 1070 pupils in total. The Foundation owns the land and buildings in which the School is located and appoints the majority of the School’s Governors.
Today, approximately 90 pupils are supported by the Foundation, other charities and local authorities. The Foundation supports over 50 boarding pupils with bursaries and works with the Heads of local primary schools in Merstham (the third most deprived ward in Surrey) to identify pupils who would benefit from Flexi Boarding. Around 30 Flexi Boarders have free places as a result. In addition to the bursaries granted, the Headteacher remits boarding charges in cases of occasional hardship. Around 10 families benefit in this way at any one time.The Trustees of the Foundation now seek to appoint an exceptional new Chair, Treasurer and one further Trustee. The former will be an outward-facing ambassador, responsible for the leadership and governance of the Foundation and ensuring the organisation is operating in alignment with its missions and values. The Chair will help to establish the Foundation’s strategic direction and guide the development and implementation of strategic plans.
The Treasurer will be a commercially minded, qualified chartered accountant. Experience from one of the big four consulting firms would be particularly advantageous. The successful candidate will serve as steward of the Foundation’s assets and pro-actively contribute to initiatives to attract funding and resources.
Given the importance of the Foundation’s estate, the main profile of interest for the new Trustee in this hire is that of chartered surveyors. Alongside the Chair and Treasurer, the new Trustee will need to uphold the highest possible standards of governance and ensure that the Foundation complies with all legal, and regulatory requirements.
Successful candidates for all roles will be dynamic, communicative leaders with strong records of leadership in their respective fields. They will be passionate about education and able to articulate the value of boarding education and state boarding schools more specifically. The roles will be pro bono.
