Thank you for considering applying for this important role.

GFSL is part of the Ministry of Justice, set up in February 2018 as a limited, not for profit company. Its role is to provide facilities management services to prisons in the south of England. The Secretary of State for Justice is the sole shareholder, GFSL being a PLC.

The Board is the governing body of GFSL. It establishes the overall strategic direction of GFSL within the policy framework laid down by the Ministry of Justice. NEDs, together with the non-executive Chair, both support and bring appropriate challenge to the decisions made by the executive in running the organisation.

The Secretary of State appoints GFSL Directors as set out in GFSL’s Articles of Association and Framework Document.

GFSL has been notified by its shareholder (MOJ) that the provision of FM services will in future be delivered by the private sector. This means that following a successful procurement process, GFSL’s services will transfer to a private sector provider/providers in Spring 2026. As the programme unfolds we will learn more.

Appointments to the GFSL Board are not regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and the recruitment process is aligned with the provisions of the Governance Code on Public Appointments.

Role description

Non-executive directors provide constructive challenge, strategic guidance, offer specialist advice and hold management to account. They should ensure they have sufficient time to be able to perform this role.

• Demonstrable experience of developing strategy and providing strategic direction.

• The ability to challenge constructively, scrutinising advice and information and maintaining independence of thought.

• An in-depth understanding of the importance of legal and regulatory compliance, and sound operational controls.

• Analytical and decision-making skills.

• Experience of communicating and influencing, including effective collaboration with others at a senior level.
