The built environment is all around us, it includes the buildings we use but also the space between them, such as roads and parks.
The Built Environment Trust (BET) is an independent charitable organisation dedicated to inspiring and supporting knowledge and practice in the world of building and the built environment. First established in 1963 as the Building Centre Trust, BET works to better understand and communicate the social impact While you do not need to be an expert in the built environment, you will need a passion for improving the built environment and an understanding of the social, economic and environmental factors impacting on our built environment. Our surroundings have on people and communities. Our vision focuses on how humans connect with the built environment, not just as a career but as a fundamental part of our daily lives.
We run education programmes and partner with organisations who also aim to improve the built environment. We showcase amazing work happening across the sector and provide new opportunities for connections and making change. We are committed to involving all members of society as knowledgeable and active voices in determining how we construct our future.
Our commercial arm, The Building Centre, was first established in 1931 and is currently based at 50 Store Street in London. It is a dynamic hub that brings together designers, product manufacturers and the public as part of its mission to inspire, connect and empower people to improve the quality of our built environment. Alongside a rich public programme of exhibitions and events, we also provide workspace for other organisations in the built environment space, venue hire and a café for visitors.
As a wholly owned trading subsidiary of the Trust, the Building Centre is responsible for all the commercial activity carried out on Store Street, from exhibitions and events to managing the leaded property within the whole building.
Following the appointment of Ann Allen as our new Chair in 2021 and the development of a new and ambitious strategy to be a leading voice and convenor the in the built environment sector, we are seeking to expand and diversify our Board, and at this time are looking for two Trustees for the Built Environment Trust and one NED for the Building Centre. For the Trustees, we are especially seeking individuals with marketing, digital and education specialisms. For the NED, we are seeking commercial skills.
With a track record as a senior leader, including sound leadership skills, capacity for strategic thinking, and experience of setting and shaping the strategic direction of an organisation, you will have knowledge of Charity governance and risk management, as well as the role of the Board in providing oversight and empowering the executive to deliver effectively. You will have a commercial head, and work effectively with the board while providing constructive challenge.
