Trustees for The Engineering Development Trust (EDT)

ob description

Would you like to make a difference to thousands of young people’s lives every year while also developing your strategic leadership and governance skills? If so, the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) would like to hear from you!

We are an educational charity established 30+ years ago, running UK-wide programmes. Our mission is to connect young people with industry and inspire STEM futures.

Young people are at the heart of all that we do and, through providing industry informed, curriculum enhancing learning experiences, we help them develop personal and interpersonal skills, fulfil their potential and make informed decisions about their future. We recognise their achievement through the Industrial Cadets accreditation and awards, an industry-led, nationally recognised quality benchmark.

Our annual income is ca £2m. Our 45 staff operate from offices across the UK, from Glasgow to Plymouth, and deliver over 40,000 experiences every year. They are supported by a network of volunteers and alumni.

Since the Covid pandemic, we have moved to a hybrid delivery model (face-to-face and virtual) and re-organised our charity to better meet the needs of the young people we serve. With our Board, we are developing a long-term strategy and business plan to grow and thrive, supporting young people of all backgrounds on their way to a successful career. We are supported by long-standing funders from the corporate and charitable worlds.

We are looking for new Trustees, including a Treasurer, to join our Board. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds (i.e. not just STEM or education) to these exciting voluntary positions and we are seeking committed and capable individuals with a range of expertise, including digital transformation, ICT, fundraising, finance and legal.

Our trustees, lead by Chair Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, are enthusiastic and engaged in EDT’s work and mission and we are proud to have 4 EDT alumni on our Board.

Commitments:

As Trustee, you will be part of the Board, required to attend 4 meetings a year. Depending on your expertise, you may also be a member of a sub-committee (Audit & Risk, Remuneration, Nominations, Governance).

You will have the opportunity to join EDT’s graduation and celebration events where you can directly experience the difference we make to young people.

The trustee role is unpaid, mainly remote (bar 2 Board meetings in central London a year, for which travel expenses are paid).

In addition to the general duties of a Charity Trustee, your responsibilities will include:

  • Bring your expertise and fresh ideas to help EDT achieve its ambitions;
  • Inform and review strategy development and leadership;
  • Advise and shape strategic plans.

What we’re looking for in our Trustees:

  • Experienced (ideally at senior/board level) and committed individuals
  • For the Treasurer role, qualified accountant with at least 5 years’ experience, knowledge of charity finance a plus
  • Strategic thinking and planning
  • Pragmatic and flexible
  • A consultative, constructive and supportive style
