Could you join our trustee board and help us to achieve our vision and ensure the long-term success of our charity?

At the Mayor of Southwark’s Common Good Trust, we are dedicated to bringing help and support to the most vulnerable members of the community in Southwark. We work to provide assistance in a variety of forms to those in need; we aim to help the poor and needy from the cradle to the grave.

We provide grants to those in need, to provide essential goods and services, such as household goods such as washing machines or cookers.

We are looking for a range of new trustees with a range of different skills to shape and steer the future of this organisation, as well as bring wisdom, energy and new perspectives to our governance.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Our trustees play an essential role in making sure that the MSCGT achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that we have a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.

Trustee duties

  • To ensure the MSCGT is carrying out its purposes, as set out in its governing document.
  • To ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and any other applicable laws.
  • To act in the charity’s best interests, making balanced and adequately informed decisions.
  • To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees in giving strategic direction (operational and fundraising), setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets.
  • To make decisions on grant applications.
  • To monitor the financial, strategic and operational performance of MSCGT.
  • Take part in fundraising activities & events.
  • Our board meets 10 times a year and holds an Annual General Meeting.

Personal skills and qualities

  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Enthusiasm for our charitable objectives

Time Commitment

  • Attendance at board meetings which take place monthly (may become quarterly).
  • Attendance at Annual General Meeting
  • Attendance at fundraising events (approx. 4 per year)
  • Trustees will also need to carry out any pre-meeting reading and preparation and may be contacted occasionally for advice or for decisions concerning emergency grant requests.
