About the Horniman Museum and Gardens
The Horniman aims to bring people of all cultures and backgrounds together, so they can experience global cultures and the natural environment. Recent decolonisation efforts and the declaration of a climate emergency demonstrates our mission to shape a positive future for the world we all share.
What will you be doing?
The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy. The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium. The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London. The Horniman is the holder of the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022.
The Horniman’s mission is to connect us all with global cultures and the natural environment, encouraging us to shape a positive future for the world we all share. You will have an empathy for this mission alongside a belief in the transformational impact arts, culture and nature can have on people’s lives. Watch this short film to hear what some of our visitors have to say about us.
Trustees are required to attend four Board meetings per year, and other sub-committee meetings, usually held at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London. Some additional time will be required to study papers, attend events and undertake other representational engagements (which can include weekends). Time will also need to be given to support the significant fundraising campaign the Horniman will be embarking upon to support our fantastic new capital project, Nature + Love. The posts are unpaid, but travel expenses can be claimed.
This role is mainly home-based.
