StepChange Debt Charity exists to tackle problem debt in the United Kingdom.
In the year of their 30th birthday, they remain the leading debt advice provider in the country. Last year more than 500,000 people sought their guidance for help with their money worries – from support like simply writing a budget, to accessing benefits or other guidance, to the nearly 160,000 people who went through their online and telephony fully regulated debt advice process.
Their work has never been more relevant. According to the Financial Conduct Authority, some 7.8 million people are currently finding it a heavy burden to keep up with their bills.
As the country grapples with a once in a generation cost-of-living squeeze and unprecedented increases in energy bills, StepChange provides the advice, support and guidance that makes a difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities nationwide every day.
As part of its continued evolution, StepChange are seeking to appoint up to 4 new Trustees to provide leadership to the organisation and to ensure that it continues to fulfil its duties and responsibilities to the people it serves.
As an organisation that places considerable emphasis on diversity at Board level, they encourage applications from appropriately qualified candidates from all sections of the community, and from people with diverse experience and backgrounds. They welcome applications from diverse or marginalised groups with a particular emphasis on younger trustees, people who identify as disabled and people from minority ethnic backgrounds. They equally welcome applications from individuals with deeper non-executive director (NED) or executive experience and candidates who may have a potential interest in taking on chair, sub-committee chair or senior independent director responsibilities in due course.
There is a particular emphasis on individuals with the following backgrounds:
For individuals with less NED experience, they are eager to engage people with:
- Lived experience of financial hardship – personal experience of financial hardship, or exposure to working closely with people who have experienced it
- Regional perspective – individuals located outside of the South-East and London
For individuals who bring more NED or executive experience, they are interested in those with a background in:
- Technology and transformation – with a particular focus on the intersection of technology, people and business transformation
- Retail Banking – experienced at a senior level in consumer lending in customer facing retail banking organisations
- Policy and government – experience navigating and influencing policy at government level (with an awareness of devolved administrations)
- Risk Management – ability to absorb and interpret complex data and information and reach informed judgment
- Legal – senior level legal experience gained in a relevant discipline
