About FoodCycle
Our Projects are run by thousands of skilled, trained, and dedicated volunteers who create tasty meals to be shared by the local community. At FoodCycle we believe that everyone has a right to good food and company without probing questions and we welcome people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Cooking with surplus ingredients, we promote healthy, sustainable attitudes towards food and its impact on the environment as well as helping people to learn more about healthy food. By creating welcoming spaces for people to meet, eat and have conversations, we also support people’s health and mental wellbeing.
About the role
We are currently seeking a new Chair to lead our FoodCycle board. You will have experience in governance as a board member for a company or charity, with the ability to provide strategic insight, expertise, and leadership. You will work closely with both the team of trustees and the senior leadership team to achieve our charitable objectives.
As Chair you will establish and maintain a strong and constructive working relationship with the Chief Executive, ensuring they are held to account and supported in achieving strategic objectives and operational and financial targets. You will also set the agenda for Board meetings in consultation with the Chief Executive and efficiently conduct business at meetings and ensure all Trustees effectively contribute.
We are particularly interested to hear from you if you have experience within food retail or wholesale, the hospitality or volunteering sectors. Experience of scaling-up an organisation, developing policy and campaigns within a charity context and successful income generation would be also advantageous. For this role, we are also looking for someone with knowledge or willingness to understand charity finance, legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities as well as strong commercial understanding.
Who we are looking for
We ask that the Chair uses any relevant specific skills, knowledge, or experience, to help the board reach sound decisions. Ideally you will be committed, astute and community minded, with the ability to think flexibly, challenge when needed and willing to speak your mind. We are looking for a confident leader and communicator, with strong interpersonal skills who will be comfortable acting as an ambassador for FoodCycle.
It is also important that you have the time to commit to the role. As Chair you will be required to spend time reviewing FoodCycle’s papers prior to Board Meetings and attend additional meetings either to support the Senior Leadership Team or help develop strategy.
The board meetings are usually held in central London or virtually four times a year (usually between 4pm and 7pm) and you are asked to attend the FoodCycle annual conference held on a weekend in October. Additionally, you should expect to be available for brief phone/virtual check-ins and are encouraged to volunteer at our projects at least once a year.
The Chair typically serves three years on the board with an option to extend. FoodCycle will invest in training and mentoring for you as necessary in accordance with your experience.
