Board Vacancy – Active Partnerships

Job description

Join the board of a national charity working to make active lifestyles the norm for everyone.

We are recruiting someone with financial expertise to lead our Finance and Risk Committee and be an active member of our main board of trustees.

Voluntary role, expenses paid

Role term: Maximum of 3 x 3 Year Terms

The Active Partnerships National Organisation is the national charity of the Active Partnerships Network – a collective of 43 locally-led, nonprofit, strategic organisations who, as valued system partners of Sport England with reach across every place in England, play a pivotal role in ‘Uniting the Movement’ to create conditions for an active nation.

Our trustees share our deep passion and energy for the role that sport and physical activity plays in helping change people’s lives. We connect, strengthen and enable locally whilst thinking and operating nationally to address inequality and improve mental and physical health. Our work informs, influences and shapes national, system and local place approaches which support physical activity, sport and ‘moving more’ as drivers for social change.

The charity is seeking a commercially experienced finance professional with a recognised accountancy qualification or qualified by experience, who can take on the leadership of our Finance and Risk Subcommittee. You will work within a dynamic and experienced group of trustees. This is an exciting time to join Active Partnerships with a refreshed team and strategy. You will work closely with our Finance Manager and lead a subcommittee with oversight and scrutiny of the organisation’s management of finance and risk management processes.

Experience of contract review and negotiation would be advantageous.  Alongside core funding from Sport England, the charity also has contractual agreements with organsiations, such as the Department for Education, which bring a significant increase to the financial transactions and risk profile of the organisation.

If you have relevant skills and would like to make a difference, please talk to us.  If you think you can make a difference but lack Board experience, please talk to us – we’re open minded about the background and experience people bring.

We are committed to establishing a board which is diverse in thought, characteristics, backgrounds and perspectives. In addition to maintaining our positive gender balance we are specifically seeking to increase our disability and ethnicity representation.

Our Purpose

The Active Partnership network’s ambitions have sat at the heart of England’s need to create the conditions for an active nation for over twenty years.

The Active Partnership national team was set up in 2011, as the national charitable organisation, enabling the local Active Partnerships to come together as a membership network.  Funded by their annual subscriptions and Sport England, our story began with a purpose to ‘represent, support and lead’ the Active Partnership network.  Over the years their agendas, relationships and approach have evolved, and the work of the whole network has seen it grow into a strong collective that comes together to learn, share, do joint work, support one another and speak with one voice like never before.

You will join a team of outstanding trustees with a range of skills and insights, growing and challenging the way we work. 2023 has already seen the successful launch of the England-wide ‘Opening Schools Facilities’ programme (significantly increasing both annual income and expenditure) and the definition of a new national strategy. Our ambitions are bold. We need someone who will help guide the board financially as we invest reserves to support our impact and deliver our vision.

The Board

Our Board is comprised of experienced Independent Non-Executive Directors, Sport England representation and strategic leaders from within the network as ‘related members’ representing their peers to ensure the network’s voice, energies, ideas, challenge, and opportunities sit at the heart of our work as a Board.

We meet 4-6 times per year, embracing a mix of virtual and face to face meetings which take place typically in London, Birmingham or Sheffield, with a hybrid option, as well as remote sub-committee meetings. All expenses will be fully reimbursed. We are a visible Board who actively participate in several events, meetings and functions to connect, learn and foster relationships with partners.

The Person

We’re bold with our ambitions because we know our challenge is big. We recognise therefore we need people with exceptional skills and qualities who can add real value. We want people who can challenge our thinking, support strategy implementation, and bring energy and commitment.

We are open to applications from independent applicants and from those within the Active Partnership network.

Closing date for applications is Monday 10th July.

Diversity Statement

We’re building a culture where diversity is valued and we can all be ourselves. We still have work to do but are strongly committed to inclusive practices which demonstrate fairness, equality and anti-racism in everything we do. We will not tolerate less favourable treatment of anyone, especially those with legally protected characteristics, and welcome applications from all sections of communities, particularly those under-represented in our organisation.
