Vacancy Description

The UKRI Board is expected to provide clear strategic direction and oversight, promoting the importance of UK research and innovation and supporting the senior leadership team of the organisation to embed effective ways of working across UKRI.

We are seeking to complement the current Board by appointing candidates’ backgrounds in the following areas:? ?

Entrepreneurship, investing or venture capital within technology, scientific, R&D intensive industries or service sectors.?
Active researchers in academia or the private sectors across the sciences, humanities and the arts, in particular environmental sciences and technologists.?
Private, public sector, charity or university leaders with strong backgrounds in risk management and corporate assurance.?

Person Specification

Candidates should meet all essential criteria as follows:

A strategic and dispassionate mindset with excellent listening, influencing and communication skills, intellectual capacity and inquisitiveness.?

Ability to help develop, communicate and deliver a clear and strategic vision for UKRI.?

The highest levels of stakeholder agility, capable of influencing an environment with a highly complex landscape of stakeholders.?

Candidates should meet one or more of the following desirable qualities detailing which one(s) they meet:

Understanding of how to deliver significant cultural change and organisational development within a large organisation that has both national and international visibility.?

Significant experience of leading new or early stage business launches and successful organisational expansion.?

Senior financial management experience gained through management of substantial budgets within a complex environment and a strong understanding of commercial and business issues.?

Deep understanding of the Research & Development environment and how it can best produce knowledge and economic and societal benefit, and the systems and approaches best used to?affect?this.?

Strong links with the business community and the ability to build coalitions to leverage private sector involvement.?

A strong grasp on how to support the growth of advanced technology, digitisation and future industries and how to increase productivity in existing industries, through the employment of technology.?

Experience working within academia industry, business and innovation in Scotland, Wales and/or Northern Ireland.?
