Introduction

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is looking to appoint two new Board Members of UK Anti-Doping (UKAD). UKAD is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by DCMS.

Background

UKAD is the United Kingdom’s independent National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) and was set up in 2009. UKAD is responsible for the implementation of the Government’s National Anti-Doping Policy for sport. Dedicated to protecting clean sport, it has established itself as a world leading NADO. Through the use of intelligence and investigations together with well-developed education and testing programmes, UKAD has been highly successful in deterring doping and catching athletes and athlete support personnel guilty of Anti-Doping Rule Violations.

UK Anti-Doping have identified they require additional skill sets to expand their opportunities for commercial income growth, and continue to develop  technology and techniques to retain their status as a world-leading NADO. UK Anti-Doping are therefore looking to appoint two new Non-Executive Directors with those skills and experience not currently reflected on the board; namely Data Analysis and Commercial/Marketing. These roles will further help UKAD continue to develop its anti-doping activities and champion wider sport integrity.

The Role

The UKAD Board is appointed by the Secretary of State for DCMS and is made up of seven non-executive Board Members, including the Chair.

Responsibilities of the Board include:

• Establishing the overall strategic direction of the organisation, working collaboratively with the Chair and a broad range of key stakeholders;
• Holding the UKAD executive to account, and providing assurance to government as UKAD’s principal funders.
• Acting as a strong advocate for the work of UKAD, including working to ensure effective communication with key partners and stakeholders (e.g. Government, UK Sport, the Home Country Sports Councils, law enforcement agencies and National Governing Bodies) both in the UK and internationally;
• Attending Board meetings, committees and panels as appropriate;
• Ensuring good governance, monitoring performance and helping to develop a supportive relationship with the executive staff to deliver a corporate strategy; and
• Ensuring that UKAD observes the highest standards of ethical and corporate behaviour at all times and that the organisation’s reputation is protected and promoted

The People

The successful candidates will join an ambitious team that faces challenges posed by the increased sophistication of doping in sport. They will demonstrate UKAD’s values of integrity, teamwork, excellence, and passion.

Essential Criteria

All candidates will need to demonstrate in their application that they meet the majority of following essential criteria to a high standard:

• A strong record in strategic decision-making and planning at a senior level in the private or public sector;
• A good grasp of both the Nolan principles of Public Life, and the significance of integrity in sports;
• The ability to understand the governance requirements placed on an arms-length body;
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and representational skills;
• The ability to win the respect of, negotiate with, and influence, senior members of government, sports and law enforcement agencies, and other key stakeholders; and
• The ability to work well with people from different backgrounds and a commitment to improving diversity and equality.

Additional Criteria

Successful candidates must also be able to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Commercial and Marketing:

• The ability to provide Board-level insight in areas of marketing, commercial sponsorship and/or strategic communications;
• The ability to identify commercial opportunities for marketing of potential UKAD products; and
• An understanding of options for sponsorship and fundraising, and of the broader sports sponsorship environment.

Data Analytics

• The ability to provide Board-level insight on the use and development of data analytics and artificial intelligence, and implementation in an operational environment;
• Previous experience of working with data analytics including financial, technical and business opportunities; and
• An understanding of the development of organisational IT strategies and delivering benefits and efficiencies from them.

Term of appointment is 3-4 years, subject to agreement.

Candidates must note the requirement to declare any interests they may have that might cause questions to be raised about their approach to the business of UK Anti-Doping. They are required to declare any relevant business interests, shareholdings, positions of authority, retainers, consultancy arrangements or other connections with commercial, public or voluntary bodies, both for themselves and for their spouses/partners. The successful candidate will be required to give up any conflicting interests and his/her other business and financial interests may be published.

Political Activity

To allow the panel to explore conflicts of interest, and in particular political activity, with the candidates in the context of their ability to perform in the role, candidates should declare any significant political activity which they have undertaken in the last five years. This information will only be provided to the panel for those applicants selected for interview. Details of the successful candidate’s declared political activity will be published when the appointment is announced.

As part of our due diligence checks we will consider anything in the public domain related to your conduct or professional capacity. This will include us undertaking searches of previous public statements and social media, blogs or any other publicly available information.
