Start Strong is a bold new collective of philanthropic foundations working to transform communications, advocacy and action on early childhood. Formed by five visionary foundations – we are uniting a wide range of voices across and beyond the early childhood community into a powerful coalition that cuts through, shifts public attitudes, and secures early childhood at the heart of our society and economy.
The UK faces some of the highest rates of childhood inequality in Europe, with devastating consequences for children’s development, life chances, and wider prosperity. We believe a new, compelling, evidence-based story about the pivotal importance of early childhood, championed by a broad coalition, can ignite government, media, business and the public to act with urgency and ambition.
We are seeking a Founding Director to lead this mission. This is a unique opportunity to build something new – setting strategy, shaping operations, and mobilising a diverse coalition to achieve systemic change. Working closely with our Chair, Board and partners, you will ensure Start Strong delivers real impact from the outset, while laying the foundations for long-term transformation.
You will be experienced in leading strategic communications and shifting societal narratives and/or leading advocacy campaigns with social purpose. Experienced in mobilising organisations, you will have an entrepreneurial mind-set that thrives on building organisations and movements from the ground up. Exceptional relationship-building skills, diplomacy, and the ability to inspire and influence at the highest levels will be essential. An understanding of early childhood is desirable but not essential; a passion for equity, collaboration, and lasting societal change is vital.
This is a rare chance to become the driving force behind a national, long-term strategic communications campaign with the potential to shape the lives of millions of children for generations to come.
