Non-Executive Board Director – Initial 1 Year appointment, Time commitment 1 day per month on average, Fee £500 per day

The Rakem Group is an agent, distributor and manufacturer of speciality raw material of paper, coatings, plastics, textile fibres, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, based in Bury, Lancashire.

To support our growing business we are recruiting a Non-Executive Director who has the skills, experience, delivery track record and innovation we require to help lead us through our next phase of growth.

As a Non-Executive Director you will responsible for:

  • supporting the Chair, Board and management team in promoting Rakem’s values and culture.
  • set and oversee strategy
  • supporting a positive culture across the organisation and adopt behaviours in the boardroom and elsewhere that exemplify the Rakem’s culture
  • constructively challenging the proposed decisions of the board and ensure that appropriate challenge is made in all circumstances
  • helping develop proposals on priorities, risk mitigation, values and standards
  • ensure that risks are suitably managed
  • scrutinise performance in meeting agreed goals and objectives
  • satisfy yourself as to the integrity of financial and other management/performance information
  • ensuring management and governance are sound

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong track record of contributing in a non-executive capacity across a range of topics and will be able to demonstrate an understanding of good governance in an organisation like ours. Successful candidates are most likely to bring experience from a range of organisations. You will have experience of successful business growth, strategy development and implementation, risk and assurance, business transformation, governance and financial control. Experience of working in the manufacturing sector is desirable. You will be committed to equality and diversity, social value and sustainability. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to constructively challenge with an objective and balanced approach. You will be able to support and inspire the Executive team.

Time Commitment

The Board meets approximately 6 times a year at our Bury site. Each board meeting is around 2 to 3 hours. In addition to being well prepared for meetings, the NED is expected to be available for ad-hoc support and project input to the Board on an as-needed basis.

Period of Appointment

The appointment will initially be for one year, with the option of renewing at the end of this period.

Conflicts of interest and commercial confidentiality

The NED appointment is made on the basis of trust, a key component of which is to ensure that there are no conflicts of interest between this appointment and posts held elsewhere. All material provided to the NED by the company should be treated as commercially sensitive, and not disclosed to third parties without the written permission of the Rakem Board.
