Mutual Ventures is a growing, vibrant management consultancy operating at the cutting edge of public service reform. We are public service design and change implementation specialists working across all sectors including children’s services, adult social care, health and other community services. Our mission is to improve life chances by making public services better, more sustainable and more connected to communities.

We are looking for two NEDs to work with the Board of Directors to help set the strategic direction of the company and to contribute to the development of the organisation.

Mutual Ventures has an established reputation in a small number of key markets. We have grown steadily over the last decade and have emerged from the pandemic positive about the impact we can make not only in established sectors but in other places too. We have a talented team, drawn from the public, private and third sectors. Stable, proven leadership and a cadre of repeat clients.

We are looking for an injection of new insight and experience to help guide us on the next stage of growth and development of the business. We are particularly interested in candidates that can either:

  • Bring business growth and development experience to transform a successful small business into a growing challenger consultancy; or
  • Bring insight and networks to expand the range of services we can offer our established clients, specifically our Local Government and/or Central Government clients

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a creative contribution to the Board by providing independent oversight and constructive challenge to the executive directors in the development and implementation of the business strategy.
  • Assist the Board in the setting of strategy, establishing clear objectives and delivering agreed plans. Regularly review performance against these objectives.
  • Support, advise and challenge the leadership team to ensure that the Board conforms to the highest standards of corporate governance and makes appropriate decisions.
  • Provide an independent view and a broad perspective to the Board’s decision-making process and ensure risks are managed effectively.
  • Play a full and active role in the governance of the Board and expected to bring an independent judgement on issues of performance, forward planning and accountability.
  • Contribute to the work of the Board based upon their independence, their past experience and knowledge, and their ability to stand back from the day to day operational management.
  • Contribute and accept corporate decisions to ensure a joined up, robust and transparent decision-making process by the Board.
  • Be available to prepare for and attend Board meetings.
  • Assist with business development activity.
  • Assist in solution development – identification of clients’ needs and how the business should respond to that need.
  • Be an ambassador for the business e.g. promoting interests of the company, possibly writing articles, attending conferences or making presentations on our behalf.
  • Encourage the best use of financial resources; ensure the organisation remains financially sustainable and financial risk is managed effectively.

Person Specification:

We are looking for the following individuals:

Role 1:

  • Proven consultancy entrepreneur
  • Track record of working at senior level in consulting industry
  • Has built a consultancy from small to medium/large sized
  • Must have an understanding of the public service consultancy marketplace.

Role 2:

  • Understands the machinery of government (central and local)
  • Has held senior level role(s) within central or local government or in public service consulting
  • Established network within the area

In addition to this, successful candidates will have:

  • Experience of working as a NED already and/or in a senior/strategic role, working with others to drive the vision of a team or organisation
  • Strong interpersonal skills with personal stature and integrity
  • High level of commercial acumen and an entrepreneurial approach
  • Ability to act independently and impartially making decisions objectively, based on understanding of facts and different perspectives
  • Strong internal and external client focus
  • Proactive approach to collaboration, communications and innovation.
