Role description

This role will offer the successful candidate a unique and exciting opportunity to support delivery of a top government priority and continue to improve the criminal justice system response to RASSO. Your input will make a tangible contribution to the experience of victims of RASSO, and a lasting impact on the criminal justice system.
The successful applicant will help to ensure the existing Action Plan, which is due to run until December 2024, is delivered effectively.
They will work with government to:
  • Provide continued challenge and support on cross-government delivery;
  • Advise on barriers to progress and how to work with the system to develop and implement solutions;
  • Identify gaps in the existing programme of work and how we can improve experience of the CJS for victims of rape and serious sexual assault;
To enable this, the successful applicant will work closely with Ministers and government officials to influence policy, and communicate effectively with stakeholders in the rape, VAWG and domestic abuse sectors.
The Independent Advisor will be expected to work a minimum of five days per month, and a maximum of two days per week to deliver this function. The exact number of days per month that the successful candidate will work will be subject to negotiation and agreed within their contract. The contract would provisionally run for a minimum of one year.

Essential criteria

You will have a proven track record of excellent strategic and analytical thinking capability, as well as exceptional ability in driving positive change.

Forging effective working relationships with the Lord Chancellor, Ministers and Senior Civil Servants will be an essential component of the role. The post holder will also engage in constructive and collaborative relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from across the voluntary sector, to support work on the Rape Review.

Given the importance of this role for the effective delivery of a major government priority, we are looking for a talented and motivated individual with significant professional experience in the adult Rape and Serious Sexual Assault (RASSO), and/or domestic abuse and wider Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) sector(s). Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience and a comprehensive understanding of working in or with the RASSO and domestic abuse or VAWG sectors;
  • Understanding of the delivery of services and provision for victims;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the multiple stages that make up the Criminal Justice System;
  • Ability to engage with and represent a wide range of views and experiences of RASSO victims;
  • Demonstratable experience of excellent, confident communication skills;
  • Critical, analytical and strategic thinking skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience working with government and/or Ministers to advise on and scrutinise policy making;
  • Existing strong links with the voluntary sector on VAWG and RASSO issues, and the ability to play in their contributions;
  • Experience of working with or within the Criminal Justice System (CJS).
