The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) seeks its next Chair of the Board of Trustees, to succeed Sir Jim Paice. GWCT is the UK’s leading charity working for a thriving countryside rich in game and wildlife. For nearly 100 years, GWCT has worked closely with farmers, land managers, gamekeepers, and estates, delivering practical, science-based solutions to restore biodiversity, improve wildlife habitats and enhance the British countryside.
GWCT is known for its independence, scientific credibility, and ability to bring together those who manage the land with policymakers, conservationists and the wider public. Its research underpins best practice on the ground and influences policy nationally. With over 1,850 peer-reviewed papers published, flagship demonstration projects like the Allerton Project, and our pioneering Environmental Farmers Groups initiative, GWCT is shaping the future of conservation in the UK.
This is a pivotal moment for the Trust. With a talented new Chief Executive and an ambitious leadership team, GWCT is poised to expand its voice, deliver landscape-scale solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss, and build on its unique heritage as a trusted, evidence-based partner. The incoming Chair will lead an engaged and expert Board of Trustees through this new era, ensuring we have the governance, visibility and resources to achieve our goals – including our centenary celebrations in 2030.
GWCT seeks an outstanding Chair, with substantial board-level leadership experience, bringing strategic vision, sound judgement, and the ability to support and mentor the Chief Executive, while also representing GWCT externally with authority and credibility. Strong financial and commercial acumen will be essential, together with a deep appreciation of the challenges and opportunities at the interface of conservation, land management and public policy. Above all, they will be a compelling ambassador for GWCT’s mission – combining wisdom, diplomacy and confidence with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, from policymakers and donors to farmers and local communities.
