We are looking for a new Chair to lead the Gallery’s Board into the next chapter of the Gallery’s history. Shoair Mavlian joined as Director in January 2023 and is setting a bold and compelling vision for the Gallery. This is an important time to join the Gallery and support our development as we go through a period of transition and reimagining.
At The Photographers’ Gallery, we explore how photography is connecting, captivating and radically changing the world we live in.
On the borders of busy Oxford Street and vibrant Soho, the Gallery is home to photography experts, novices and the photo -curious; artists and students; tourists and passers – by; and an enthusiastic and committed staff team.

We are looking for someone with:
- Experience of working at board level, ideally but not necessarily as Chair
- A track record of creating inclusivity and diversity in the arts
- The ability to input meaningfully to the strategic thinking for an internationally renowned arts organisation and to consider and support fundraising
- Experience and understanding of the commercial elements within an arts organisation. Including recognition and support of our enterprises – Print Sales, Bookshop and Café
- The capability and people skills to take on the ambassadorial role for The Photographers’ Gallery and represent the Gallery across a wide range of external stakeholders including funders, partners and policymakers
- A passion for the arts and photography and the power of the medium to transform lives
Main responsibilities:
- Developing a close and trusted working relationship with the Director and Executive Management Team of The Photographers’ Gallery
- Ensuring the Board is diverse and has the skills and knowledge appropriate to the future strategy of The Photographers’ Gallery, by working with the Chair of Nominations Committee to appoint new Trustees
- Working with the Executive Management Team to prepare for trustee meetings, including pre- consultation and information sharing that enables effective decision-making
- Leading the Board to ensure that the group works effectively to support and contribute to Executive Management Team plans, when appropriate and in line with the Articles of Association
- Supporting fundraising, including Arts Council England applications and reporting, and making a wider contribution to ensure The Photographers’ Gallery meets its Business Plan
- Attending key events and championing The Photographers’ Gallery to key current and potential stakeholders We are open to applicants who may not fit all the criteria – if you feel you have relevant experience to bring to the role please get in touch. 7 Terms of appointment Length of appointment
- The Chair is appointed for an initial term of three years, with the option to be re-elected for a further one term of three years.
Time commitment
- The role of Chair requires a time commitment of two to four calendar days each month. The Board meets every quarter, including a yearly Annual General Meeting. The Chair is expected to attend exhibition openings and other important Gallery events. Renumeration
- The post of Chair is voluntary and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in line with Gallery guidelines. Location
- Board meetings are held in person at The Photographers’ Gallery in central London, with the option to dial in if in-person attendance is not possible.
