Chair for E3G – Environment think tank

Organisation: E3G

Role: Chair

Term: 3 years, which can be renewed to maximum of 6 years

Location: UK

Remuneration: £14,000 per year

E3G is an independent think tank working to build a safe climate for all.

Working closely with partners in government, politics, business, civil society, science, the media, public interest foundations and elsewhere, E3G aims to build a climate safe world by aligning different forces in society to create the laws and institutions necessary to drive change. They build cross-sectoral coalitions to achieve carefully defined outcomes, chosen for their capacity to leverage change and work to develop and shape policy initiatives and engage the required political processes to deliver them effectively.

After a successfully leading and developing E3G for nearly two decades, E3G’s co-Founder, Tom Burke, will be stepping down as Chairman – creating the opportunity for an experienced leader, passionate about solving the climate crisis, to lead their Board.

E3G has tripled in size in recent years and expanded their international footprint, driven by their excellent reputation and policy impact. The new Chair will oversee the UK Board which supervises legal entities in Belgium, Germany, Ireland and USA. To support their expanded structure, E3G has reorganised their leadership and evolved their governance, bringing fresh external insight onto the Board and enhancing functional expertise in key areas. The Chair will therefore provide leadership at a critical moment in E3G’s history – as they consolidate their now larger organisation, and continue to provide meaningful and relevant solutions to climate change, form effective partnerships, influence stakeholders, and explore new models for E3G to influence and inform positive change.

In addition to your personal commitment to E3G’s mission and values and governance experience, you will bring a successful track record of strategic leadership in an international context, whether public or private sector, and evidence of managing and influencing multiple, complex and significant stakeholders. You will have Chairing experience (Boards, committees or as an executive), with an understanding of complex governance and managing risk in an international environment. You will bring financial acumen, coupled with experience of guiding an organisation through evolution and growth and engaging with senior leaders in civil society, business, politics and public life.

This position is based in the UK, and the Chair will be expected to attend four face to face meetings per year, which may take place in London, Brussels or Berlin, along with one Board away day. Travel and other reasonable expenses will be covered.
