How some of last century’s food fads are bouncing back

Who would have thought people would be bringing out the Vienetta at dinner parties and adding the Cheestrings to their children’s lunchboxes in 2025?

Maybe it’s the return of Bridget Jones, maybe it’s just the wheel of fashion turning faster as the 21st Century warms up – but a number of the discarded favourites of the nineties are making a comeback. A new generation has discovered ice-cream Vienetta, with its crunchy chocolate layer that was the must-have desert before Facebook and virtually disappeared with its arrival. The Sauv Blanc star is waning, too as the joys of Chardonnay are back on the wine list after thirty years in the doldrums, partly, it has to said because the quality has improved in the time between and the prices have remained keen.

In particular, Balsamic vinegar and sun-dried tomatoes are now de rigeur for millennial salads and you won’t be laughed off the table if you serve up a chocolate fondant pudding with the melting centre.

But as a grown up you’ll still have to be just a little careful who catches you scoffing the kid’s Cheestrings at your office.
